Phd Funding Postdoctoral Research in Computer Science

The Phd Funding hypothesis of this research project is the following:
Is it possible to modernize the electoral process while balancing the trust of the people on the trustworthiness of the deployed technology. In order to provide evidence in support of this hypothesis, we propose first to design a rigorous software engineering principle, which we call trust by design, that reproduces the trust-instilling elements of the conventional process in an electronic infrastructure. Second, together with our industry partners, we develop electronic election technology based on the trust by design principle. Third, together with the Copenhagen, Frederiksberg, and Aarhus municipalities, we empirically evaluate the technology in order to analyze the social, political and cultural implications inherent in digitally transforming the democratic process.

Postdoctoral candidates should have a Phd Funding in Computer Science or Mathematics and an established research record in one or more of the following fields:

applied formal methods
cryptography
electronic voting systems (of primary importance)
rigorous software engineering
trust and trustworthiness
logic and semantics
logical frameworks and type theory
proof theory and higher-order theorem proving
program verification

The Phd Funding positions are part of a larger effort to prove that it is possible to modernize the democratic process without losing the trust of the voters using epistemic logical framework technology and cryptographic methods, such as full homomorphic encryption. The research will be conducted under the supervision of Profs. Joseph Kiniry and Carsten Schürmann. A Phd Funding successful applicant will be hired initially for one year with the option to renew. The start date is flexible, but the position cannot be filled before 1 July, 2011. Candidates are also encouraged to explore research ideas on top of and beyond the project description. The positions provide significant opportunities for professional development.

Scholarship Application Deadline:15 May, 2011.

PhD Funding Manchester & International Business School Comparative Studentship, 2011 in UK

PhD Studentship in Comparative & International Business at University of Manchester in UK-2011

The rise of China, India and Brazil as economic and political ‘drivers’ of the global economy is subject to both academic research and policy deliberations (Lauder, Brown, and Brown 2008). These economies not only have managed to sustain growth despite the economic downturn but have also turned out to be drivers of economic change that challenge established wisdom of both economic performance and development. This project will look at the following issues:How firms from rising powers may be disrupting the current paradigm of global competition and are thus changing the ‘rules of the game’ (Zeng and Williamson 2007).

Rising power firms are increasingly becoming global players, taking on more substantive roles in global production networks or becoming lead firms in their own right (Schmitz 2004). Which factors facilitate this development, how can firms upgrade their position.Furthermore, rising power firms often address ‘bottom of the pyramid’ markets or engage in entrepreneurial innovation that is unprecedented and alleviates social problems (London, Anupindi, and Sheth 2010). This project seeks to identify drivers and outcomes of this economic development process.
ValueThe three-year, full-time award covers tuition fees and a tax-free annual stipend of approximately £13,000 per year.
EligibilityApplicants should ideally have a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree in a relevant discipline and have obtained or expect to complete by autumn 2011, a Masters degree in a relevant business and management subject.

The research will involve both theoretical development and empirical field-work. The candidate should have good inter-personal skills, be willing to travel to collect data and have excellent writing skills. The candidate will be required to apply methodology flexibly and competently, including both qualitative and quantitative techniques. Applications are invited from UK, EU and international candidates.

Scholarship Phd Funding Program 2011-2012 from HONDA Malaysia

HONDA Malaysia Sdn Bhd and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are looking for 20 determined, underprivileged youths for the Honda Dreams Fund (HDF) 2011 intake.

The company is encouraging youths aged between 17 and 24 who have dreams to fulfill but lack the funds to do it, to apply for the scholarship.

“It is always our hope to assist deserving underprivileged Malaysian students by providing the scholarship to young and aspiring minds. HDF is now into its fifth year. By this year, we will have 100 HDF scholars in total,” Honda Malaysia CEO Yoichiro Ueno told a news conference to announce the launch of the 2011 intake on Tuesday.

The scholarship is open to those who have at least completed and passed Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia or Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia examination, with a combined household income of less than RM1,500 per month.

It is also a non-binding full scholarship and scholars are free to select their course of study at the institution of their choice. Successful applicants will also receive RM500 allowance per month and those living away from home will have their rental expenses covered too.

Honda Malaysia allocates about RM1 million for the HDF programme each year.

Applications for the scholarship opened on Jan 5 and since then, roadshows have been held in 13 locations throughout seven states to reach out to more underprivileged youths, especially those in rural communities. To date, close to 700 applications have been received.

The roadshows were held in Sabah, Negeri Sembilan, Malacca, Sarawak, Johor, Perlis and lastly, the Klang Valley. During the roadshows, on-the-spot applications were taken when applicants were interviewed instead of having to send in 500 word essays.

Ueno said this was better for students who are not so good at articulating their dreams in words.

Interested applicants may download the forms from the HDF website at www.honda.com.my/hdf. Closing date for applications is March 31

2011 PhD Funding Positions at ICT International Doctoral School, University of Trento, Italy

Study Subject:Combining ontological and process-based reasoning,Mixing logical and statistical reasoning,Structured Data Indexing and Retrieval
Employer:University of Trento
Level:PhD
Scholarship Description:3 positions are currently available within the DKM research unit. These PhD positions are among the grants of the ICT International Doctoral School, University of Trento. This call is under project specific grants with FBK and will be jointly supervised by FBK and the ISTC-CNR, Laboratory for Applied Ontology, Trento. Semantic Business Process Management [4, 2] has the main objective of improving the level of automation in the spec- ification, implementation, execution, and monitoring of business processes by extending business process management tools with the most significant results from the area of Semantic Web. For instance, when the focus is on process mod- eling, i.e. the activity of specification of business processes at an abstract level, annotating process descriptions with labels taken from a set of domain ontologies can provide additional support to the phase of business analysis, or to the creation of valid process diagrams, which not only comply with the basic requirements of the process semantics, but also satisfy properties that take into account the domain specific semantics of the labels of the different process elements.

Humans solve the problems of interpreting multimedia documentation by both exploiting structural regularities in the data, as well as making use of common sense and specialized knowledge that explicitly represents the meaning of data. In spite of this simple observation, current approaches to processing content over the Internet are based either on a statistical approach, which exploits the regularities of the content encoded in a statistical model (using machine learning methodologies), or, alternatively, by logical approaches, by exploiting logical knowledge encoded via logical theories (semantic web and ontologies). In both cases this unilateral approach leads to a limitation in the performance or in the quality of the results.
